Institute of Road Transport
The primary object of the institute is the instruction and dissemination of useful knowledge for the development of road transport. Its subsidiary objects are to promote and provide for the technology oriented education pertaining to road transport, to conduct operational and scientific research related to road transport and to impart training and education to all categories of staff and officers of STUs.
Institute was set up mainly to cater to the needs of STUs in Tamil Nadu, all the State Transport Undertakings of Tamilnadu are its members, besides it has one Institutional member and an ordinary member. The institute is managed by a Governing Council and the Secretary to Government, Transport Department, Government of Tamilnadu is the Chairman of the Governing Council. The Director of the Institute is the member Secretary of the Council.
The Director is assisted by three Manager cadre officers as Additional Directors at Head office. They look after (1) Administration and Education, and (2) Research, Training and Testing 3) Driver Training Wing at Gummidipundi. Besides, an Additional Director is posted exclusively to look after the Central Purchase Unit established exclusively to cater the needs of STUs.
