Driver Training at Gumidipoondi 

The Institute of Road Transport had set up a Driver Training Wing at Gummidipoondi in the year 1979 with an aim to impart Driver Training on scientific lines to produce safe and efficient drivers with certain minimum standards of age, educational qualifications, physical and medical fitness with an aptitude in driving of Heavy Transport Vehicles.  The Institute at Gummidipoondi has annual capacity to produce 500 Heavy Vehicle trained drivers.  So far the Institute has produced 19,500 drivers in the 30 years of its existence.

Location

The Institute is situated at Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur District which is about 45 Km  away from Chennai on Chennai-Calcutta Grant North Trunk Road NH-5 

Infrastructure

a) Land              :    The Driver Training Wing of Institute of Road Transport, Gummidipoondi is housed in an area of 55 acres of land. 

b) Class Room    :    Handling Theory classes well furnished class rooms are available.

c) Driving Laboratory:    A Separate Driving Laboratory equipped with various cut-section models of vehicles are available for educating the students.

d) Training Fleet :    A fleet of 14 Heavy Passenger Vehicles are provided for Training purpose.

e) Workshop      :    Workshop also available to carryout day-to-day repair works and maintenance of the training fleet.

f) Driving Range :    A Driving Range worth of Rs.26,05,000/- was also constructed in the year 1988-89 in an area of 15 acres of land for ensuring various basic skills of Driving.

g) Staff             :    Totally 34 members are working in this Driver Training Wing.

h) Testing         :    Physical fitness Testing equipment including vision equipment  ,testing equipment worth of Rs.7 Lakh to test the physical abilities of Drivers imported from JAPAN and UK are also available in the Institute.

i) Teaching Aids :    The students are being taught by using latest Multimedia  aids.

j) Hostels          :    The course is totally residential nature and Hostel facilities available for accommodating 200 students at a time.

k) Canteen        :    The canteen facilities are provided for students.

l) Residential     :    The staff working in Gummidipoondi are also provided Quarters  with Residential Quarters in the same campus.  Around 10 Staff members residing in the Quarters.

m) Library        :    Library is also available for the benefit of students with 
1500 books and Audio Visual Aids.

n) Bus Driving  :    The Institute also equipped with Bus Driving simulator . Simulator at its Taramani Campus at the rate of 1.30 Lakhs.

Heavy Motor Vehicle Driving Training Course at TNSTC'S Centres

The Heavy Vehicle Driver Training Course is also conducted at 16 other places namely Trichy (IRT), Madurai, Pollachi, Salem, Villupuram, Vellore, Kumbakonam, Karaikudi, Pudukottai, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Erode, Dharmapuri and Trichy (SETC) in association with TNSTC from 1994-95.

All the TNSTC HVDT Centres have so far trained more than 28,000 drivers.

The minimum requirements for the trainees to get admitted this driver training are gives as below:

General Education :A pass in 8^th Std. with tamil as one subjector equivalent examination recognized by the State Government.

Age: Minimum 20 Years

Height : Not less than 155 Cms.

Weight : Not less than 50 Kgs.

Driving Licence : 1 year completed in Light Motor Vehicle

Driving with PSV Badge.

With good eye sight and free from other physical disabilities
